Carpet cushion is what determines how a carpet feels beneath your feet. Not only will it increase comfort, but according to the Carpet Cushion Council carpet cushion can also help reduce noise, prolong the life of the carpet, and improve the overall thermal insulation properties of a floor covering.
Today, environmentally conscious consumers can purchase eco-friendly carpet cushion. There are 3 main types of cushion, foam, rubber and fiber, all of which have options that are “green.”
- Bonded Foam – Bonded foam padding is comprised of scrap foam. Using this process, foam waste is recycled and reused to create new padding; thus easing the strain on our landfills and the environment. Some carpet suppliers offer a bonded carpet cushion that is made from 90% post industrial recycled material, and the only non-recycled ingredient used in their cushion is a urethane pre-polymer that binds the foam particles together.
- Rubber – Rubber carpet cushion is commonly the most expensive but provides the most comfort when compared with other padding options available. To create the rubber padding, some manufactures recycle discarded tires commonly found in landfills all over the US. Additionally, rubber itself is made from the latex off the sap of rubber trees. Harvesting can begin once the trees are 5-6 years old, and if done correctly the tree will yield latex in the same spot for up to 5 years. Then the opposite side will be tapped allowing the first side to heal over; thus making it a renewable resource.
- Fiber – Fiber carpet cushion can be either natural or synthetic. Natural fibers include animal air, felt and jute. Synthetic fibers include nylon, polyester, polypropylene and acrylics. Many carpet manufacturers, such as Shaw and Mohawk, produce synthetic fiber pads. These pads are made from 100% post-industrial synthetic fibers and do not contain adhesives.
