Decorating with Area Rugs

Area RugArea rugs can be used to complete your room’s décor, define a space or to create a focal point.

When creating a focal point, keep in mind that a rug with a bold design will become your room’s focal point, especially when the furnishings are a solid color.  In retrospect, a rug that picks up the colors in your furniture will help make your furniture the focal point.

Using a rug in the entry or foyer not only gives your visitors a welcoming feeling, but also separates the private areas of your home from the common areas.

If you’re planning to add a rug to your dining room, make sure chair legs are still on the rug when people get out of their chairs.  To keep the back legs of the chair from going over the rug, add 4 feet to the length and width of the table to determine the minimum rug size.  Often times, china cabinets and/or serving tables are not placed on the rug.

In rooms such as living rooms or family rooms, you can either place all of your furniture on top of the rug or you can place a rug inside the seating area.  If you place a rug inside the seating area, make sure all of the coffee table legs are on the area rug and the length of the rug is approximate to the length of the furniture.  It is okay to have the front legs of a sofa on a rug and the back legs on the flooring.

When placing a rug in a bedroom keep in mind that if you use one large rug under the bed, the only thing you will see is the pattern edge; thus making Persian or Oriental rugs a poor choice for bedrooms.  Another design option is using several different rugs in your bedroom.  They can be placed at the foot of the bed and along the sides.

To cover an entire room with one rug, using a large rug can bring the features of a room together.  When doing so, be sure to leave at least 8” of the floor showing around the perimeter.  You can also use more than one rug in a room as a separator, dividing the room into different areas. If using multiple rugs, make sure they have at least on aspect in common, whether it’s design, color or size.  This compliment will help bring the room’s décor together.  Also keep in mind that selecting a smaller rug in a solid, subtle tone will help highlight an existing floor and a larger rug with bold, vibrant colors can be used to de-emphasize your floor.

Don’t forget about rug shapes, too.  They are more than just rectangular.  They can be round, oval, hexagon or octagonal.
